REAL ID Now Required for Domestic Travels

What You Need to Know Before Your Next Flight

Starting May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will officially begin enforcing new ID requirements for domestic air travel. All passengers 18 years of age and older will need to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license—or an accepted alternative—prior to departure.

What Is a REAL ID?

REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards are issued by your state’s DMV and are typically marked with a star in the upper portion of the card. If your current license does not have a star, it’s time to check with your state’s DMV and apply for an upgrade in advance of your next trip.

Alternative Form of Identification

Don’t have a REAL ID yet? No problem—TSA will continue to accept other approved forms of identification including:

  • A valid U.S. passport
  • A U.S. passport card
  • A foreign government-issued passport
  • A permanent resident card (Green Card)

You can find a full list of accepted documents on the TSA’s official website.
